What is EBLR? Complete Explanation
EBLR stands for External Benchmark Lending Rate. Since October 2019, the Reserve Bank of India mandated all banks to link all new floating rate loans (home, auto, personal) to an external benchmark rather than their internal rates like MCLR or Base Rate.
For most banks, this external benchmark is the RBI repo rate. Your loan interest rate is calculated as:
Your Loan Rate = RBI Repo Rate + Bank's Spread + Credit Risk Premium (CRP)
The bank's spread is fixed and rarely changes. The CRP depends on your CIBIL score and loan profile. So when RBI changes the repo rate, your loan rate changes automatically at the next quarterly reset.
๐ก Example: SBI's spread is 2.65%. If your CIBIL is 760, CRP might be 0.10%. Your rate = 5.25% + 2.65% + 0.10% = 8.00%. When RBI cuts by 0.25%, your new rate = 5.00% + 2.65% + 0.10% = 7.75% automatically.
How CIBIL Score Affects Your Interest Rate
Your CIBIL score is the single biggest factor in determining the interest rate you get on any loan. Here is how it typically works across banks:
| CIBIL Score Range | Home Loan Rate | Personal Loan Rate | Eligibility |
| 800โ900 | Best rates (7.50%) | Best rates (10.85%) | Excellent |
| 750โ799 | Good rates (7.75%) | Good rates (11โ13%) | Very good |
| 700โ749 | Standard rates (8.25%) | Higher rates (14โ18%) | Good |
| 650โ699 | High rates (9%+) | Very high (20%+) | Possible |
| Below 650 | Usually rejected | NBFC only | Difficult |
